WORCESTER, Mass. – Lafayette women's basketball dropped a 70-48 final at Holy Cross on Saturday at the Hart Center. Junior guard
Teresa Kiewiet paced the Leopards on offense with 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Holy Cross opened the game with a stout 12-6 advantage, before Kiewiet drained a three-pointer to cut the Leopards' deficit to three points. Simone Foreman quickly restored the Crusaders' six-point lead (15-9) after converting an and-one with 2:28 to go in the quarter. Freshmen
Haylie Adamski and
Maddison Krug both notched buckets with under two minutes to play, but Holy Cross held onto an 18-13 lead after the first quarter.
The Leopards kept it close in the second period, only being outscored 14-12. Holy Cross opened the stanza with a 6-0 run, but a layup from sophomore guard
Talia Zurinskas brought the hosts' lead back down to single digits (24-15). Lafayette then had its own offensive flurry thanks to a bucket from Krug and a triple by freshman point guard
Haley Poser. Kaitlyn Flanagan got a three-pointer to fall with 1:09 to go for the Crusaders, but Lafayette had the last laugh of the half as Poser knocked down another shot from beyond the arc. Holy Cross narrowly led 32-25 at the intermission.
Both teams struggled to score in the third quarter, combining for just 17 points. The Crusaders led by as many as 16 points (41-25) in the frame right before Lafayette flipped the script. The Maroon and White ended the period with an 8-0 run that was led by six points from freshman guard
Emma Heaney. The Plainview, N.Y. native finished with career highs of six points, four rebounds and a steal in 17 minutes.
The Crusaders took control in the final quarter, which led them to their fourth conference victory of the season. The hosts outscored Lafayette 29-15 and led by as many as 26 points (1:11). Kendall Eddy led the way for Holy Cross, finishing with 15 points, three rebounds and steals and two assists.
Shooting from beyond the arc and points scored off turnovers were the main keys to Saturday's matchup. The Crusaders shot a season-high 47.4 percent from downtown, while the Leopards shot 26.1 percent. Holy Cross also made the most of its caused turnovers, scoring 28 points compared to Lafayette's 11.
After a week of games on the road, head coach
