Overtime Thriller Falls Away from Men’s Basketball

Lafayette returns to action on Saturday for The Rivalry

BOSTON, Mass. - A last-second regulation jumper from Boston's Sam Hughes gave way to an overtime win over Lafayette, 77-73, on Wednesday evening at Case Gymnasium.

Sophomore Caleb Williams was the Leopards' main option, scoring 24 points while adding three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Andrew Phillips (18) and Shareef Jackson (17), who blocked a career-high four shots, completed the trio in double figures. Lafayette shot 40 percent from the floor and kept to eight turnovers, while forcing 14.

The Terriers earned the opening 10-5 advantage, splitting points between Michael McNair and Hughes, by 15:30.

Lafayette made a 19-8 run to overtake the lead, 24-18, by the eight-minute mark. Williams knocked down eight points in the Leopards' 7-of-11 stretch from the floor.

By 2:25, Boston crept as close as 31-30 using a 3-for-4 performance beyond the arc.

Phillips added back-to-back 3-pointers to the tally, including a buzzer-beater into the break. The Maroon and White held steady on defense in the final minutes, making a pair of crucial stops for a 39-30 margin at halftime in the noisy, filled-to-capacity arena.

Lafayette kept its distance through the first five minutes of the second half; four scorers helped the squad to a five-point advantage, 45-40. The Terriers' Ben Defty had eight points for the hosts by 14:43.

At 6:55, Boston took an 11-8 edge, paced by Donte Tisinger's five points, to close the gap to two, 53-51.

Williams buried a contested 3-pointer (5:25) prior to Boston returning fire with two of its own from long range at 2:09, 62-59.

Chance Gladden's driving layup at 1:46 brought the hosts within one, 62-61, before a Leopard turnover lost the following possession with 37.8 seconds on the clock.

Phillips fouled Boston's McNair, who was awarded two free throws. Neither fell through for the Terrier at 0:17.

Boston fouled Williams to regain possession and the guard secured both of his attempts at the line to extend the advantage to 64-61 with 11.6 seconds left to play.

Hughes, who was fouled by Ryan Pettit during a rebound scrum, stepped up to the line for the Terriers and made his first foul shot (0:04), before catching his own rebound off the second one. As the regulation horn sounded, his jumper created a 64-64 tie and thrust the game into extra minutes.

In overtime, the Leopards got as close as 74-73 using a drawn-up 3-pointer for Christian Humphrey-Rembert at the 25-second mark.

The hosts outscored Lafayette 13-9, including 6-of-7 from the charity stripe, in the extra session for the 77-73 final.

Hughes led the Terriers with 23 points, six coming in overtime, and six rebounds. The squad finished 29-for-57 from the floor and 9-of-25 from beyond the arc.

Next up, the Rivalry with Lehigh takes place on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Stabler Arena. The contest will be part of a doubleheader road trip with Lafayette women's basketball, slated for a 4:30 p.m. tip-off.
