Leopards Down Terriers to Capture Second PL Win

Maroon and White were led by 43 combined points by Kiewiet and Adamski

BOSTON, Mass. – Leopard guards Teresa Kiewiet (23) and Haylie Adamski (20) were key contributors in Lafayette's nail-biting victory (65-64) at Boston U. on Wednesday, combining for 43 points. The Maroon and White are off to their best start in Patriot League play since the 2021-22 season (2-1).

With 4:11 to go in the game, Boston U. put together a 9-3 run that brought it within one point (64-63) of tying the contest. Without possession the hosts had to resort to intentionally fouling, which sent Adamski to the charity stripe at the 19-second mark. The Media, Pa. native split her free throws and the Terriers had enough time for one final shot.

Hildur Gunnsteinsdóttir was open in the far corner and took a three-pointer with one second remaining, but she was fouled. Trailing by two points the guard had three attempts at the line to ice the game, but she missed her first and third attempt to grant Lafayette its second Patriot League win of the season.

Lafayette grabbed a 10-5 lead (7:13) to get the first quarter rolling, when senior guard Sauda Ntaconayigize buried a triple off an assist by freshman point guard Talia Zurinskas. The Terriers wasted no time retaking the lead (15-12) thanks to a 10-2 run fueled by multiple scorers. After the first quarter expired, the hosts held onto a three-point lead (17-14).

The Terriers' momentum carried over as the second period got underway. Anastasiia Semenova handed her team an 11-point advantage (27-16) at the 7:01 mark, but Kiewiet halted the run seconds later with a driving layup. The North Mankato, Minn. native finished the game with a team-high 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting. The Leopards trailed by eight points (38-30) late in the half (1:11), before Adamski made a big triple with 0:57 to go assisted by fellow classmate Maddison Krug. At the half, Boston U. held a 38-33 advantage.

Head coach Kia Damon-Olson's group scored 20 points in the third quarter and held the hosts to just 11. Anete Adler opened the half's scoring, but then the Maroon and White began to find their offensive groove. Buckets from Krug (2), Zurinskas (2) and Adamski (3) quickly made it a tie game (40-40) with 7:51 to go. Boston U. responded with back-to-back baskets, but the Leopards refused to back down. A 9-0 run handed the visitors a 49-45 lead, which featured makes from Zurinskas (4) and Kiewiet (5). Lafayette kept its foot on the gas and maintained a 53-49 lead with 10 minutes to play.

Turnovers and points from them were the pillars of Wednesday's matchup. The Leopards committed a season-low four turnovers compared to Boston U.'s 11. Lafayette turned those turnovers into 15 points, while the hosts managed four.

The Maroon and White are back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center for more Patriot League action vs. Navy.
