CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Lafayette baseball team dropped its season opener Friday night, falling 15-2 to No. 23 Miami at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. Junior
Teddy Cashman provided a multi-hit performance for the Maroon and White, while also in a driving a run.
The Hurricanes jumped on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs in the frame on RBI-singles by Brylan West and Jake Ogden, and an RBI-fielder's choice by Fabio Peralta.
The Leopards struck in the third inning, when sophomore
Liam Ebbs doubled to left center field and was driven home by a two-out double from junior
Matt Colella, to make the score 3-1.
In the fourth, Miami added three more runs to its lead on an RBI-single by Ogden and two bases-loaded walks, bringing the score to 6-1.
Lafayette added a second run in the sixth as Colella reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on an RBI-double down the right-field line by Cashman, cutting the Miami lead to 6-2.
Miami took control in the middle frames, led by a grand slam from Alex Sosa during an eight-run sixth inning. The Hurricanes scored one more run in the seventh, making the final tally 15-2.
Junior
Tristan Helmick took the loss, giving up six runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and three walks over 3.2 innings. AJ Ciscar earned the win for Miami, surrendering two runs on five hits, while striking out nine in 6.0 innings of work.
Lafayette continues its series with the Hurricanes tomorrow, with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
