CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Lafayette Leopards dropped both halves of a doubleheader to No. 23 Miami on Saturday, falling in the first game, 14-4, and in the second game, 14-3.
In the afternoon opener, Miami jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Cian Copeland. The Hurricanes scored another run in the second to lead 7-0.
Lafayette got on the board in the third.
Boden Fernsler ignited the rally with a solo home run to deep left field, and later in the inning,
Jack Mislan connected on a three-run blast to cut the deficit to 7-4.
The Hurricanes responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame, bringing the tally to 12-4 in the 14-4 final.
Trey Deitelbaum took the loss, surrendering nine runs on five hits over 2.1 innings. Miami starter Rob Evans earned the win, giving up four runs on four hits across five innings.
The nightcap saw the Hurricanes jump out to a 12-0 lead through the first four innings. Lafayette broke the shutout in the seventh inning when
Teddy Cashman singled and later scored on an RBI single from
Luke Caucci.
Alex Barrist followed with an RBI-double to score Caucci and Barrist eventually crossed the plate on a bases-loaded walk issued to
Liam Ebbs, which made the final score 14-3.
Trace Florio was charged with the loss, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing five runs on four hits. Miami's Lazaro Collera secured the win with 5.0 innings of work, allowing one hit while striking out 10.
Lafayette will close out its series with Miami on Sunday at 1 p.m.
