MADISON, N.J. — The Lafayette fencing team secured a narrow victory over Rutgers and had competitive showings against Drew and Cornell during the MACFA A Round Robin held at Drew University on Saturday. The Maroon and White were led by
Tyler Morse, who won eight of the nine bouts he fenced.
In the first match of the day against Cornell, Lafayette fell 15-12 in a closely contested battle. The epee squad stood out with a 5-4 victory, highlighted by two wins each from Morse and
Ryan Leibowitz, while
Henry Cohen added one victory. The sabre corps remained competitive in a 5-4 loss, with
Nikita Kogan and
Jordan Ginsberg both securing two wins. In foil,
Ryan Kramer and
William Nicoll combined for three wins, though Cornell secured a 6-3 win in the weapon.
Lafayette faced a tougher challenge against host Drew, falling 16-11 despite a strong showing in the sabre event. The sabre squad defeated Drew 6-3, as Kogan swept his three bouts and Ginsberg also added three victories. In the epee event, Morse led the way with three individual victories and Leibowitz had one win, though the team narrowly lost the weapon, 5-4. In the foil, the Maroon and White had one victory by
Owen Riley.
In the final match, the Leopards edged out Rutgers, 14-13, led by a dominant performance in the epee. Leibowitz, Cohen and Morse each earned multiple victories in epee, to propel the team to a 7-2 weapon win. The sabre squad contributed four victories, with Kogan securing two wins and Ginsberg adding two more. Despite a 6-3 loss in foil, where Nicoll and Kramer notched two and one wins, respectively, the combined effort across all weapons secured the overall team win for the Leopards.
Lafayette will next be in action on Sunday for the MACFA Championships.
