Spencer Chosen as Next Fencing Coach

Brandeis alum served as Haverford’s head coach for 18 seasons

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette Athletics has tabbed Christopher Spencer as the next head coach of the fencing program, it was announced on Monday.

Spencer comes to College Hill after an 18-year tenure as the head coach at Haverford. During his time at the helm, Spencer produced six team conference championships, six weapon squad conference championships and seven NCAA division one regional finalists, and was thrice voted conference coach of the year.

"We are thrilled to welcome Chris as our head men's and women's fencing coach. His passion for student success and exceptional background as a leader in intercollegiate athletics will fuel our fencing program into the future," said Andrew Foster, senior assoc. A.D. for Facilities and Operations. "We look forward to having him on our team."

"In the long history of fencing at Lafayette College, there have been many great athletes, coaches and teams," Spencer said. "I hope to help continue that success, and to stand on the shoulders of those giants so the program can reach new heights."

Prior to Haverford, Spencer spent four years at Wellesley as an assistant coach. He is also recognized as the founder and coach emeritus for the Riverside Fencing Club in Amherst, Mass., where he guided fencers from beginners to Junior Olympic qualifiers and NCAA recruits.

Spencer also served on the NCAA Division I Championships Committee from 2014-18. He is a 1994 graduate of Brandeis, earning his bachelor's degree in international relations. In 2019, he secured his Prévôt D'Armes from the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association in all three weapons.
