WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Despite a mid-game power surge featuring three home runs, the Lafayette baseball team dropped a 12-6 decision to William & Mary at Plumeri Park on Saturday.
The Leopards faced immediate pressure, as William & Mary plated four runs in the opening frame. Lafayette began its climb back in the second inning when
Brandon Doubek launched a solo home run down the left-field line, to make the score 4-1. However, the Tribe answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer, extending their lead to 6-1.
Lafayette's offense found its rhythm in the fourth inning. After
Jack Mislan singled and
Teddy Cashman was hit by a pitch, Doubek delivered againm this time with an RBI-single.
Alex Barrist added a two-out RBI-single later in the inning to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Leopards continued to power through the middle innings, receiving a solo home run from
Matt Colella in the fifth and a two-run home run from
Boden Fernsler in the sixth to bring the score to 7-6.
William & Mary responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and three runs in the eighth to finish the game, 12-6.
Trey Deitelbaum took the loss after allowing five runs on three hits in a single inning of work. Stephen Christopher earned the win for William & Mary, pitching 2.1 innings of relief, while allowing two hits and striking out five.
Lafayette closes out its series against William & Mary on Sunday at 1 p.m.
