Leopards Sweep Sunday Doubleheader at Holy Cross

Dobil collects five hits for Lafayette

WORCESTER, Mass. – Lafayette baseball swept both halves of a doubleheader against Holy Cross, defeating the Crusaders, 7-6, and 13-9, on Sunday at Fitton Field.

In game one, Lafayette jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Liam Ebbs scored on a fielder's choice by Brandon Doubek. However, the Crusaders responded immediately in the bottom of the frame by scoring five runs including a CJ Egrie home run and a two RBI-double from John LaFleur to make the tally 5-1.

The Leopards began their comeback in the fourth inning. Benefiting from two Holy Cross errors, Will Dobil delivered an RBI-double to score Boden Fernsler. Liam Ebbs later reached on an error that allowed Dobil to cross the plate. The momentum continued in the fifth as Fernsler notched an RBI-single and Dobil followed with his second run-scoring double of the game to tie the score at 5-5.

After Holy Cross briefly regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Gianni Royer solo home run, Lafayette answered again in the sixth. Ebbs singled and later scored on a clutch two-out single by Jack Mislan to knot the game at 6-6.

In the final frame, Luke Caucci entered as a pinch runner for Doubek and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Fernsler.  Dobil then provided the heroics, lining his third double of the day to drive in Caucci for the go-ahead run, bringing the final score to 7-6.

Owen Basso earned the win with a dominant relief appearance, throwing 2.1 perfect innings. Henry Harding took the loss for Holy Cross, yielding one run on three hits over two innings of work.

In game two, the Crusaders jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning.

The Leopards turnaround began in the third inning when Matt Colella doubled to right center, driving in Ebbs and Ryan Ulisse to put Lafayette on the board. The Leopards surged ahead in the fourth with a four-run frame, highlighted by an Alex Barrist RBI-single and a sacrifice bunt by Matt Colella that scored Ulisse for a 6-5 lead. Dobil and Fernsler also contributed to the rally, with Dobil hitting an RBI-single and Fernsler scoring on a sacrifice fly from Ebbs.

Lafayette extended its advantage to 9-5 in the fifth as Fernsler launched a two-run home run to left field, followed later by an Ebbs RBI-single that scored Dobil. Doubek added further cushion in the sixth with a two-run homer that brought home Charlie Chropuvka and made the score 11-5. Although Holy Cross tightened the game at 11-9 following a Ryan Grundy three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, Doubek struck again in the eighth with a two-run double to seal the final 13-9 margin.

Ben Waterman collected the win, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up one run on three hits. Kellen Moore earned the save in relief. Moore was dominant over the final 3.2 innings, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out five batters. Holy Cross reliever Brett Mulligan was charged with the loss, surrendering three runs on three hits, with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.

The Leopards will next travel to Villanova for a Liberty Bell Classic game on Tuesday at 3:25 p.m.
