PLYMOUTH, Pa. — Powered by its offense and a trio of effective pitchers, Lafayette cruised to an 11-1 victory over Villanova on Tuesday afternoon. The Leopards combined for 12 hits, including three home runs, to defeat the Wildcats in a Liberty Bell Classic quarterfinal.
Lafayette broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when
Matt Colella launched a three-run home run to left field, scoring
Alex Barrist and
Kyle McKernan. The Wildcats made the score 3-1, driving in a run in the fourth.
The Leopards added to their lead in the fifth inning as
Teddy Cashman hit a solo home run to left field, to make the score 4-1.  The margin was further extended in the eighth when Cashman drove in reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week,
Will Dobil, with a bunt single, to bring the tally to 5-1.
The Maroon and White sealed the win with a six-run ninth inning that saw 11 Leopards bat in the frame. The inning was highlighted by a bases-clearing grand slam from McKernan, who drove in
Bode Grieve, Dobil and
Boden Fernsler. Earlier in the inning, Dobil had also recorded an RBI-single to score
Jack Mislan, while Colella crossed the plate on a wild pitch as the Leopards secured the 11-1 win.
Tyler Kidwell earned the win in relief for Lafayette. He provided 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits, while striking out three batters. Villanova's Matthew Kahn took the loss. Kahn pitched 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Lafayette will next host Manhattan on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
