Early Rally Pushes Leopards Past Lehigh

Doubek collets three hits for Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Early offensive production propelled Lafayette to a 7-3 victory over Lehigh on Sunday afternoon at Legacy Park. The Leopards used a four-run first inning and a two-run second to establish a lead which they would never relinquish. The game was a scheduled home game for Lafayette, but was moved to Lehigh because of weather and field conditions.

Lafayette struck quickly in the opening frame after Will Dobil was hit by a pitch and Matt Colella singled. Brandon Doubek drove in the first run with an RBI-single to right field. The Leopards then benefited from a Lehigh error in left field that allowed Charlie Chropuvka to reach third and plated both Colella and Doubek. Chropuvka later scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 4-0.

The Leopards added two more runs in the second inning. Ryan Stoddard singled and scored on a Dobil RBI-base hit. Later in the inning, Alex Barrist, who had singled to center, crossed the plate on a sacrifice bunt from Colella, making the score 6-0.

Lehigh attempted a comeback in the fourth inning, scoring two runs, and added a solo home run in the seventh, to make the score 6-3. However, Lafayette answered in the bottom of the seventh when Colella singled and was driven home by another RBI-single from Doubek, which made the final tally 7-3.

Lafayette's offense was led by Doubek, who finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Colella added two hits and two runs scored, while Dobil reached base multiple times and contributed an RBI.

Ben Waterman earned the win, throwing 6.0 innings, allowing three runs with two strikeouts. Owen Basso provided effective relief to secure the save, pitching 3.0 scoreless innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Jackson Shepelsky took the loss for Lehigh. In one inning of work, he surrendered two hits and four runs with a strikeout.

The Leopards will next host Wagner on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
