NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The Lafayette women's soccer team battled to a scoreless 0-0 draw against Iona on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
The Leopards generated early offensive chances, starting in the second minute when forward
Ava Murphy registered a shot that earned Lafayette an early corner kick. Murphy led the Lafayette attack with three total shots on the afternoon. Midfielder
Ava Varholak also attempted a first-half strike, while midfielder
Emma Harmon provided Lafayette's first shot on goal in the 29th minute, which was turned away by the Iona goalkeeper.
Lafayette continued to push for a breakthrough in the second half, recording four shot attempts. Midfielder
Jessica Giordanella forced a save in the 70th minute, followed shortly by a strike on target from midfielder
Era Methoxha in the 73rd minute that was denied.
Nadia Zaffanella and
Brooke Commins added late shot attempts.
In net for Lafayette, goalkeeper
Catherine Apker made five saves on 12 shots faced, to secure the clean sheet. Iona goalkeeper Kayla Kalbaugh stopped all three shots on goal that she faced out of nine total shots to record the shutout. Both goalkeepers played the full 90 minutes.
Lafayette is next in action when it returns to Easton for its home opener on Sunday at 3 p.m. against St. Joseph's.
