Lafayette Blanks Wagner, 2-0, Behind Second-Half Surge

Mazzella and Castle score goals in the Leopard victory

EASTON, Pa. - Lily Mazzella scored the game-winning goal in the 71st minute to propel the Lafayette women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Wagner on Sunday at Mike Bourger Field at Oaks Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, the Leopards broke through when Mazzella netted an unassisted strike at the 70:01 mark. Lafayette added insurance in the 79th minute as Lily Castle found the back of the net off a crossing pass from Era Methoxha, which brought the final tally to 2-0.

Lafayette dominated the offensive tempo throughout the contest, outshooting Wagner 16-3, including a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. Methoxha generated heavy pressure for the Leopards, putting four of her game-high seven shot attempts on frame. Nadia Zaffanella added three total shots, two of which were on target.

Lafayette goalkeeper Catherine Apker earned the win and secured a clean sheet, stopping the lone shot she faced over 90 minutes of action. Wagner goalkeeper Abigail Marcello recoded seven saves on 16 shots faced in 90 minutes.

Defensively, Lafayette held strong across both halves, limiting the Seahawks to just two total shots in the first period and one in the second. Brooke Commins, Abby Giordano and Calleigh Elder led a back line that held Wagner without a single shot on goal in the final 45 minutes.

Lafayette will return to action by hosting La Salle on Thursday at 7 p.m.
