HAMILTON, NY - Despite shooting a season-low 51.5 percent from the foul line and hitting a season-low three three-pointers, the Lafayette men's basketball team escaped from Colgate with a hard-fought Patriot League road victory.
Lafayette (13-5, 5-0 Patriot League), which shot just 17-of-33 from the foul line and 3-of-13 from three-point range, forced Colgate (8-10, 1-4 Patriot League) to take two poor three-point attempts and commit one turnover in the final 52 seconds.
"It's unusual because we've done a very good job at the line all season," said Head Coach Fran O'Hanlon of the Leopards' foul shooting woes. "This is a huge win for us, especially having lost both regular season games to them last season. This is a very good, physical team that plays very aggressively."
Lafayette seniors Brian Ehlers and Stefan Ciosici led all scorers with 23 and 16 points, respectively. Ehlers scored 16 of his points in the second half, including nine of the Leopards' first 11 of the half. Eleven of Ciosici's points came in the first half. Ehlers, Ciosici, and Tyson Whitfield each had seven rebounds, while Whitfield chipped in eight points. Mick Kuberka came off the Leopards' bench to pour in nine points in the victory.
Colgate was led by Pat Campolieta's 12 points, while Jordan Harris, who was in foul trouble most of the second half, added 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Leopards led 28-22 at halftime and shot 45 percent from the field, compared to Colgate's 38 percent shooting performance.
The Leopards return home to host Bucknell on Wednesday, February 2 at 8:00 p.m. in the first rematch of the 1999 Patriot League Championship Game. For ticket information, call (610) 330-5471.
