First Night Soccer Game at Lafayette Goes to Double OT

Oct. 13, 2000

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Fittingly, the first night soccer game contested at Lafayette was played against Lehigh, and fittingly it went to double overtime before Lehigh's Lauren Rybas put in a loose ball in the box to give Lehigh a 2-1 win on Friday night in women's soccer action.

Lehigh controlled the momentum in the first half, outshooting Lafayette 5-1, but three saves by Lafayette keeper Ashley Wesmiller (Pittsburgh, Pa/Mt. Lebanon) kept the Lehigh offense in check.

The Mountain Hawks struck in the opening minutes of the second half when Rybas took a corner kick pass from Adrienne Grunwald and connected for a goal at 50:28.

Lafayette (8-6, 0-3) responded near the 74-minute mark. The Patriot League's leading scorer Lafayette sophomore Emily Myers (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) broke away from the Lehigh defense and was tackled from behind. The play resulted in a yellow card being issued to Lehigh and a free kick given to Lafayette. The Leopards took advantage of the opportunity, as sophomore Katie Fina (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) took classmate Cheryl Christianson's (Sea Girt, N.J./Wall Township) pass and booted it home at 74:22.

Neither team would score in the remaining minutes of regulation, and the game went to overtime. In the first overtime session, Lehigh had a goal waived off for obstructing Lafayette keeper Wesmiller at 100:39. Four minutes later, the Lehigh fans would hold their collective breath, as Myers fired a shot that sailed just over the crossbar with 30 seconds remaining.

Three minutes and 24 seconds into the final of two overtime periods, Rybas collected the loose ball in the box and gave Lehigh (7-6, 2-2) the 2-1 win.

For the game, Lehigh outshot Lafayette 17-11. Lafayette goalkeeper Wesmiller finished with 10 saves in 108 minutes, while Lehigh goalie Jami Bisetti ended with six.

Lafayette stays at home for its next game. The Leopards welcome St. Peter's on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
