EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's soccer team closed out its regular season with a 3-2 win over Colgate on Tuesday afternoon at Metzgar Fields.
The Leopards' win over the Patriot League regular-season champion put Lafayette's record at 11-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Lafayette's 11 wins is the most ever for the Leopard program which began in 1990.
The Leopards' win over top competition coincided with senior day, as Lafayette honored the team's lone member of the class of 2001, Emily Josephson (Randolph, N.J./Randolph).
Colgate took an early lead in the first half, as Angela Pugliafico connected for a long-range shot at 6:36.
Just over 12 minutes later, it was the Leopards' turn. As has been the case all season, Emily Myers (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) found her way through the opponent's defense. Myers' scoring run began from 50 yards out, as she wound her way through three Colgate defenders. She pulled up on the left of the goal and blasted home a shot from 12 yards for her league-leading 16th goal of the season. The score knotted the game at 1-1 at 18:30.
The score remained tied through the end of the first half and well into the second, when Colgate's Sena Maziarz slid a shot past Lafayette keeper Marissa Mullins (Wall, N.J./Wall Township) at 60:40.
Just under 12 minutes later, sophomore Briana Rinchiuso's (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) fourth goal of the season tied the game at 2-2. Rinchiuso collected a cross from sophomore Sarah Harting (W. Bloomfield, Mich./American International) and immediately fired a shot past the Colgate goalkeeper.
The biggest goal of the game came at the 85-minute mark, when freshman Kerrie Kiley (Greenlawn, N.Y./St. Anthony's) fired off a long-range blast from 27 yards for the game-winner. The goal, which came off an assist from Myers, was Kiley's second game-winning goal of the season.
The assist upped Myers' Patriot League-leading point total to 39, coming on 16 goals and seven assists. A sophomore, Myers has already carved her name in the Lafayette record books. Her 16 goals on the season is the fourth best single-season total ever and her seven assists tie her for the second most in a season at Lafayette.
Mullins (Wall, N.J./Wall Township) and sophomore goalie Ashley Wesmiller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) split time in goal for Lafayette, combining for five saves while allowing two goals in 90 minutes. Kate Jassin made six saves and allowed three goals in the loss for Colgate (10-8, 4-2).
