ANNAPOLIS, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette's bid to win its first Patriot League game of the season came up just short, as Navy scored a goal 32 seconds into overtime to claim a 4-3 decision in women's soccer action on Friday night.
Navy freshman Stacy Finley netted a goal at 90:32 to lead Navy (5-8, 1-3) to its first Patriot League win this season.
Lafayette took the lead early when sophomore Emily Myers (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) scored just under two minutes into the game off a cross from freshman Katie Morton (Churchville, Pa./Penn Charter).
Freshman Kristen Quigley (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) gave Lafayette (8-5, 0-2) a 2-0 lead when she scored off an assist from sophomore Briana Rinchiuso (Norwell, Mass./Norwell). The tally was Quigley's second of the season.
Navy junior Melissa Rains put the Mids on the board at 37:25 when she lobbed a shot from 35 yards out over Lafayette keeper Ashley Wesmiller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon). Erin Kelly and Justine Fisher were each credited with an assist on Rains' goal.
Fisher tied the game just before halftime (40:41) when she scored off Rains' corner kick.
In the second half, Navy took a 3-2 lead when Fisher netted her second goal of the match off another corner kick. Kelly and Heather Honnette each assisted on the goal.
Lafayette battled back to tie the game at 3-3 when Myers scored her second goal of the game and 10th of the season. She converted a penalty kick at 66:30 to even the score. Myers leads the Patriot League in scoring with 25 points, coming on 10 goals and five assists.
Navy didn't waste much time in the overtime session, as just 32 seconds in Finley scored from 15 yards out on the left wing off an assist from Nadia Sheikh and Megan Weller.
Lafayette is now 8-5 overall and 0-2 in the Patriot League. The Leopards will next face Lehigh on Oct. 13 at Metzgar Fields.
