Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Colgate, 68-66

Feb. 23, 2000

Box Score

EASTON, PA - Lafayette committed 30 turnovers on the night, but in the end, it was the last one that mattered most.

Trailing 68-66 with 4.9 seconds left, Sara Harris, playing in her last collegiate regular season home game, dribbled the length of the floor and attempted to pass to Christina LiVecchi, who was wide open under the basket. Unfortunately, the pass sailed just off the fingertips of LiVecchi, over her head and out of bounds. Colgate escaped with a two point victory.

The Red Raiders made a valiant come back in the second half, trailing by as many five. But then Colgate went on a 17-2 run from 9:25 to 4:11 that gave them a 10 point lead. Freshman forward Colleen McCaffrey was instrumental in the run, scoring seven of her 15 points, and grabbing two rebounds.

It looked bleak for the Leopards, trailing 10 with just over four minutes to go. However, the Red Raiders caught the turnover bug, and Lafayette capitalized. Colgate scored just two points over the final 3:30, on Alison Hanson's two free throws, which ended up being the game winners. Harris hit for two of her 11 points on a pair of free throws to make the score 68-66 with 0:33 remaining. The Leopards chose not to foul, instead digging deep for a defensive stop, which they got when LiVecchi blocked Hanson's runner from the lane and then fell on the carom and called timeout.

Lafayette held leads as much as 12 points in the first half, and led 34-30 entering the locker room at half-time. LiVecchi led three scorers in double-figures, with 15 points, including a career-high tying 11 rebounds. Also hitting for double-figures were Harris, with 11, and Liz Rojahn with 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Colgate was led by Frances Boone, who scored 19 points from her point guard position. McCaffrey had 15, and center Leanne Nassar added 10, respectively.

The Leopards return to action this Saturday, as they travel to Lewisburg, PA to take on Bucknell. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
