LEWISBURG, PA - Lafayette women's basketball saved the best for last. In the final game of the regular season, the Leopards won a hard-fought battle versus the number two seed in the Patriot League tourney, Bucknell, 61-60.
Liz Rojahn hit a layup with 1:30 remaining, part of a 10-point, 5-for-7 half, that proved to be the game-winner. Then the Leopards made two impressive defensive stops, including a last second stand against the Bisons' sensational freshman Molly Creamer. Creamer drove right with under 10 seconds on the clock, but Chris LiVecchi stepped up and deflecter her desperation attempt from 15 feet, and Jen Bayer grabbed the errant shot and hung on as her teammates rushed the floor.
The win was a result of many fine Leopard individual efforts. Rojahn led the way in scoring, popping in 17 points and added four assists. Bayer hit for 14 points and snagged eight rebounds. Sara Harris rounded out the double-digit scorers, accruing 10 points, while LiVecchi had eight points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Kim Costello also set a career-high mark with five steals to go along with her four assists.
As a team, Lafayette shot an impressive 53 percent, while holding Bucknell to just 39 percent in the second half and 41 percent for the game.
In an epic battle, no team led by more than eight points either way. Lafayette clawed its way back from an eight-point first-half deficit, and Bucknell came back from a pair of eight point holes in the second stanza, the last one with 8:49 remaining on a LiVecchi lay in.
Senior Lori Houck led the Bison and all scorers with 21 points. Vicki Quimby hit for 14 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
With the win, Lafayette wrested the fifth seed from Army, and will face Lehigh in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament on Friday, March 3 beginning at 8 p.m. For a complete schedule of all tournament games, men and women, and a TV listing for the tournament, visit the web on Feb. 28 and look for a release.
