Burke's Key Free Throws Help Lafayette Break Away

Feb. 7, 2000

Box Score

EASTON, PA - Four free-throws by Brian Burke, on a one-and-one and a technical, took what was a close game versus Albany and turned it into an anticlimactic ending, as Lafayette ran away with its last non-league home matchup of the regular season, 90-70 over Albany.

With 6:28 remaining, Lafayette clung to a hard-fought 64-56 lead, but Burke was fouled, and on the ensuing argument, Albany center Dave Schloss was issued a technical foul, sending Burke to the line for four straight shots. He sunk all four, part of an 11-for-11 night from the line, accounting for all 11 of his points. The Leopards never looked back from the 12 point lead, extending their home record to 8-1.

For Lafayette's offense, it was a tale of two halves, both being good. In the first half, when the Leopards shot 49 percent, Brian Ehlers scored 16 of his game-high tying 26 points. In the second half, Tyson Whitfield hit for 14 points, including four three-pointers, en route to Lafayette's 56 percent shooting half. Stefan Ciosici remained consistent throughout, bringing his lunchpail and tossing in 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. It was his fourth double-double of the season.

The Great Danes stayed in the contest for much of it on the strength of point guard Todd Cetnar's hot-shooting night. He scored 26 points, including 4-of-6 from downtown and 8-of-8 from the line. Matt Haggarty had 12 points and Will Brand 10, respectively.

Lafayette wins its seventh in a row, stretching the Leopards' record to 15-5 heading into the last six Patriot League contests. Albany falls to 10-14 overall.

The Leopards return to action this Wednesday, Feb. 9 as they head to Annapolis, MD to face second place Navy in a key Patriot League matchup. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
