Long Island Tops Leopards 10-4

BROOKLYN, NY - Four Lafayette players each collected two hits apiece, but it wasn't enough to keep Lafayette from falling, 10-4, at Long Island on Wednesday.

After a scoreless first inning, the Blackbirds belted out three runs in the second frame. Matt Early led off the inning with a solo homer. The next LIU batter was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Joe Sottile who cracked a two-run homer to give LIU a 3-0 lead.

Long Island tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning, coming on an RBI-double and a ground out, while adding the fifth and game-winning run.

The Leopards lit up the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Bob Osipower led off with a single and and later scored following singles from Jason Carlough, T.J. Stevens, Jason Pomante and Tye Gonser. Lafayette finished the inning with three runs coming on five hits, all singles.

Long Island answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and added two insurance runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Lafayette scored its final run in its final at-bat, as Gonser singled home Stevens to put the final at 10-4.

On the day, Osipower went 2-3 followed by Gonser who was 2-5 at the plate with two RBI. For LIU, Early hit for the cycle, going 4-5 with three RBI.

Josh Oshinsky took the loss for Lafayette, pitching two innings while surrendering four hits and three earned runs. LIU's Kevin Miller was the winning pitcher, throwing seven innings while striking out 11 and allowing three earned runs on eight hits.

Lafayette (1-9) returns to action on Saturday in a doubleheader at Drexel.
