Lehigh Salvages Series Split With 3-1 Win In Nightcap

April 10, 2000

Box Score

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A pitchers' duel saw Lafayette starter Scott Dennis (Spencertown, NY/Chatham) throw six innings, while giving up just three runs only to see his Lehigh counterpart hold the Lafayette offense to just one run in a 3-1 Lafayette loss on Monday.

Both Dennis and Lehigh starter Kevin Post (3-1) were strong through the first three innings of the second game of the doubleheader, holding the opposing offense scoreless.

Lehigh struck first with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Lehigh offense got the job done with just three hits in the inning. Anthony Piccola led off the inning with a walk and quickly advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jeffrey Pietrak's single moved Piccola to third, where he was sent plateward by a Patrick Hollander single. Pietrak advanced to third on the single and scored on a sac fly from Rob Moran. The final run of the inning came when Jeremy Mack bunted home Hollander who had earlier stolen second and advanced to third on Moran's sac fly.

That would be all the offense that Lehigh would need as Lafayette could break through for just one run, that coming in the top of the sixth. With two outs in the inning, Bob Osipower (Quakertown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) got the inning going when he was hit by a pitch. The next batter Jon Kline (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) singled through the right side and moved Osipower to third. Osipower scored on a mishandled ball by the second baseman. The inning ended, however, when Matt Tambellini (Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) went down swinging.

Lehigh held Lafayette scoreless in the Leopards' final at-bat to hold on to a 3-1 decision.

Post held Lafayette to just four hits in the game, struck out eight and allowed just one run, which was unearned. Dennis (0-3) got the loss, despite a six-inning performance that included seven strikeouts and seven hits.

The Leopards fall to 7-18 overall and 3-5 in the Patriot League while Lehigh ups its record to 13-12 overall and 3-5 in the Patriot League.

Lafayette returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Hofstra at 3 p.m. at Metzgar Fields.
