Holy Cross Takes First Game of Baseball Doubleheader

WORCESTER, Mass. - Lafayette was held scoreless and allowed just six hits in a 13-0 loss to Holy Cross in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Holy Cross starter Jim Sweeney (3-3) threw seven innings while striking out seven in a shutout win for the Crusaders.

Junior Ian Burley (Nazereth, Pa./Notre Dame) was the only Lafayette player to touch Sweeney for a multiple hit game. Sophomores Vince D'Angelis, Jon Kline (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) and Tye Gonser (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles) and freshman Matt Tambellini (Millville, N.J./Sacred Heart) added the other four hits.

Lafayette starter Kevin Swords (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) held the Crusaders scoreless through the first three innings. However, Swords (1-5) allowed nine runs in the fourth. Holy Cross starting pitcher Sweeney led off the fourth with a homer. The Crusaders proceeded to crank out seven more hits in the inning, including four extra base efforts that consisted of a home run by Jeff Miller, a pair of triples and a double.

Miller struck again in the fifth with a two-run homer, his second round-tripper of the game to give Holy Cross an 11-0 lead. Holy Cross (11-15, 6-3) added two more runs in the home half of the sixth to capture the 13-0 shutout win over Lafayette (8-19, 3-6).
