WEST POINT, N.Y. - After spending Friday, Saturday and Sunday in a hotel waiting for the weather to clear, Lafayette finally got to play some baseball on Monday, but saw a pitchers' dual end in a 5-3 loss.
Vince D'Angelis (Montvale, N.J./St. Joseph Regional) got the Leopards' offense on the board early, leading off the game with a double. He later scored when Bob Osipower (Quakertown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) singled to center.
Army got that run back in the bottom of the second as Kyle Kalkwarf's first collegiate home run tied the game at 1-1.
Lafayette temporarily retook the lead in the top of the third. D'Angelis again doubled for Lafayette and scored when Tye Gonser (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles) singled to center. Gonser stole second and scored the Leopards' third run on an RBI-single from Osipower. Osipower finished the day 2-3 with two RBI. The two-run inning gave Lafayette a 3-1 advantage.
That lead would last just a few batters, as a defensive letdown with two outs in the Army third allowed two runs to score and the Cadets to tie the game at 3-3.
Lafayette starter Mike Palos (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) exited the game after five innings, having allowed three runs (one earned) on just four hits.
Army dealt Lafayette the fatal blow in the next inning. First baseman Craig Mattox drilled a two-run double down the right field line for the game-winning runs in the 5-3 final.
Relief pitcher Kevin Swords (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) took the loss to fall to 1-6. Swords gave up two runs on two hits in an inning of work. Army starter Buck Adams fanned four and scattered seven hits in seven innings of work for the win.
Lafayette moves to 9-23, 4-9, while Army ups its record to 17-14-1, 7-5.
