WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Lafayette used a four-run first inning to grab the early advantage and held the lead for the entire game in a 10-7 win over Monmouth in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday.
Lafayette got three strong innings from starter Scott Dennis (Spencertown,N.Y./Chatham). Dennis got the win to improve to 2-3. Matt Tambellini (Millville, N.J./Sacred Heart) and Kevin Swords (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) came on in relief to help close out Lafayette's 11th win on the season (11-23). Swords got the save.
The Leopards set the tone for the game in their first at-bat. Senior Bob Osipower (Quakertown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) drove in the first two runs of the game with a single. Osipower scored two batters later when Ian Burley (Nazareth, Pa./Notre Dame) connected for his fourth home run of the season to give Lafayette a 4-0 lead.
After allowing Monmouth (15-22) a run in the fourth and two in the fifth, Lafayette put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth inning. An RBI-single from Jason Carlough (Clinton, Conn/ Morgan School) brought home Burley to get the inning going. A second run scored on an error. Vince D'Angelis (Montvale, N.J./St. Joseph Regional) , Tye Gonser (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles) and Osipower all added RBI-singles to account for the final three runs of the inning.
Gonser and Osipower each finished the day with three hits to lead the Leopards.
Lafayette returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Navy in a Patriot League doubleheader beginning at noon.
