Peahens Too Much for Leopards in First Game

April 26, 2000

FORKS TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Lafayette (6-17, 4-6 Patriot League) hung tight for much of the game, but couldn't overcome a powerful St. Peter's softball team in the end, dropping 8-2.

The Leopards, tied at zero after two complete innings, gave up three runs in the top of the third inning, all on either wild pitches or passed balls. The Peahens had three hits, but none drove in any runs.

Lafayette responded with one in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Becky Foley (Jamison, Pa./ Villa Joseph Marie) scored from first on a Becky Chmielowski (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) double to right center. St. Peter's avoided a big inning when Gina Galati's (McMurray, Pa./Canon McMillian) smash to centerfield was snagged for the first out.

The Peahens then piled on four runs in the top half of the fifth inning, all off pitcher Jana DeFillips (Cedar Knolls, N.J./Whippany Park), normally the starting third baseman. The hole was too great for the Leopards to overcome, mustering just one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Freshman Foley continued her hot hitting, going 1-for-2 with a run and a base-on-balls. DeFillips also went 1-for-2. Pitcher Kathy Vassos (Wilmington, Del.) picked up the loss, going four complete innings and allowing just two earned runs.
