Wesmiller Tabbed as Women's Soccer Player of the Week

Sept. 11, 2000

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Wesmiller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) has been named Patriot League women's soccer Defensive Player of the Week.

Wesmiller, who earned Player of the Week honors twice as a freshman, picked up where she left off in 1999. Wesmiller participated in three shutouts in the Leopards' first four games of the 2000 season.

In Lafayette's season-opening win over Morehead State on Sept. 1, the Pittsburgh native recorded a season-high 10 saves in 90 minutes of shutout action. The Leopards' second game of the season saw host Marshall pepper Wesmiller with a barrage of shots, leading to four Marshall goals, the only blemishes on Wesmiller's record this season.

Wesmiller got back on track in Lafayette's home opener vs. Wagner. She made five saves in 69 minutes of action before Head Coach Wayne Miller relieved her in a 5-0 blow-out win on Sept. 6.

In the Leopards' most recent outing, Wesmiller made seven saves and recorded her second complete shutout of the season, a 1-0 win at Mount St. Mary's on Sept. 9.

As freshman, Wesmiller set a Lafayette single-season record for shutouts in a season with five. She played every minute in goal for Lafayette and helped engineer the eighth best turnaround in the country, as Lafayette finished 7-9-1.

This season Wesmiller has a 1.12 goals against average and a .875 save percentage.

Lafayette (3-1), which is off to the best start in the program's 10-year history, returns to action Wednesday when it travels to La Salle for 4 p.m. kickoff.
