WEST POINT, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Senior forward Jen Hughes netted the lone goal of the match and her first tally of the season in the 55th minute to lift Army past Lafayette, 1-0, in Lafayette's Patriot League women's soccer opener on Friday evening at Clinton Field.
Though both teams had chances in the first half, neither was able to break through. Army's 12th and final shot on goal proved the game winner when Hughes knocked in Karen Tien's cross, booting an 18-yard shot into the back of the net.
Eight minutes into the game, Lafayette senior Emily Josephson (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) nixed a potential Army goal when she headed the ball away after the keeper was pulled out of position. In the 24th minute, Army goalkeeper Sara Johnson smothered a dangerous shot by sophomore Briana Rinchiuso (Norwell, Mass./Norwell). Later in the first half a Leopard shot went wide as it crossed the mouth of the goal.
After Hughes snapped the scoreless tie, Lafayette just missed the equalizer when Kati Kochersperger's (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) shot rolled wide of the left post six minutes later. Army also pulled up short for an insurance goal when Army's Tina Connors hit the post in the 68th minute.
Johnson earned the shutout, as Army improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in Patriot League play. Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week Ashley Wesmiller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) gave up just one goal in 90 minutes.
Lafayette held a slight lead in shots for the second straight game, 12-11, but was dominated in corner kicks, 11-1.
Lafayette's record is even at 3-3 following a 3-1 start that was the best in program history. The Leopards return to action on Sunday when they travel to Brown for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
