EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) -
The Lafayette College football program has named Keita Malloy (pronounced key-AH'-ta) an offensive assistant who will work with the receivers. Malloy starred at the University of Delaware and in the Arena Football League before beginning his coaching career.
Malloy is the sixth new member added to the Lafayette football coaching staff since Frank Tavani was named Lafayette's 27th head coach on Dec. 11, 1999. He joins offensive coordinator Mike Faragalli, defensive coordinator John Loose, running backs coach Matt Hachmann, defensive assistant Bryan Cook, and offensive assistant Kevin Keating as the Leopards' first-year assistant coaches.
One of the rare two-way players in this era of college football, Malloy played both receiver and defensive back, while also returning kicks and serving as a holder for the Delaware teams that won two Yankee Conference titles and made three NCAA Division I-AA playoff appearances. He continued his playing career in the Arena Football League with the Massachusetts Marauders, the Albany Firebirds, and the Texas Terror.
"Keita is another outstanding addition to the Lafayette football staff," said Lafayette Director of Athletics Dr. Eve Atkinson. "'His personal experiences of winning championships and his proven ability to coach should be tremendous assets to our football program."
"I am really excited to have an individual on our staff who has competed at one of the highest levels of Division I-AA football," said Tavani. "Keita is already proving to be a great fit with our student-athletes and the entire Lafayette football family."
Malloy has spent the past five years as an assistant coach at two different Wilmington, Del., high schools - serving from 1995-97 on the staff at Mount Pleasant High School, and from 1998-99 at John Dickinson High School.
"I have always had the dream of playing professional football and I achieved that, so coaching is a natural fit for me," said Malloy. "I just hope I can pass on what I have learned both in my life and my career to these fine student-athletes at Lafayette College."
A 1995 graduate of Delaware with a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice, Malloy finished his college career as the fifth all-time leading receiver in school history. He was a three-year letterwinner and earned All-Yankee Conference honors as a receiver in 1991. After his collegiate career, he helped the Massachusetts Marauders win the Arena Football League championship in 1994 and the Texas Terror (now known as the Houston Thunderbears) win the same title in 1996.
The Washington, D.C., native also served as the strength and conditioning coach and as an assistant baseball coach at John Dickinson H.S. for the 1999 season.
Malloy is single and resides on College Hill in Easton, Pa.
Lafayette opens its 119th season of football on Sept. 9, when Towson visits Fisher Field for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. The Leopards' 2000 schedule features five home contests, including Ivy Leaguers Princeton and Harvard, as well as Holy Cross and the 136th meeting with arch rival Lehigh.
