EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette College football team has named seniors Mike Levy (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) and Phil Yarberough (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) its 2000 team captains as selected by their teammates.
"I thought it was two excellent choices," said first-year Leopards' head coach Frank Tavani. "Everyone in the program could see the leadership develop and it was a pretty resounding vote. I believe both Phil and Mike will be excellent captains."
A starter at either linebacker or defensive tackle in the first four games last season, Levy suffered a serious hand injury and played sparingly the remainder of the year. He has been moved exclusively to defensive tackle to start the 2000 season. A two-year letterwinner who majors in economics and business, he recorded 51 tackles and recovered three fumbles as a sophomore.
An All-Patriot League receiver last season, Yarberough enters the 2000 season in 10th place all-time in Lafayette history in both career pass receptions (83) and career receiving yards (1,246). An economics and business major who was a GTE/CoSIDA District II Academic All-American as a sophomore, he led the Leopards last season with 50 receptions for 651 yards.
Lafayette opens its 119th season of football this Saturday, Sept. 9, when Towson visits Fisher Field for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. The Leopards' 2000 schedule features five home contests, including Ivy Leaguers Princeton and Harvard, as well as Holy Cross and the 136th meeting with arch rival Lehigh.
