EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Bucknell's freshman sensation Desire Almind took the Bison's game against Lafayette into her own hands in the second half, scoring 17 of her 23 points to lead her squad past the Leopards, 69-46, in the Patriot League matchup on College Hill.
The Leopards (4-11, 0-2) opened up an early lead over the league-leading Bison and exchanged the advantage with their opponents several times in the first half. Lafayette used the solid free throw shooting of junior co-captain Samiayah Council with :20 remaining to go into the locker room up 33-32.
But the Bison (11-3, 2-0) were not willing to give up easily in the second. The four-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week Almind scored six points in a 17-5 Bison run to start off the second half and picked up the slack for teammates Molly Creamer and Vicki Quimby who got themselves into foul trouble.
Lafayette was led offensively by freshman Megan Haughey, who tied a career-high 10 points in the conference game. Sophomore center and the Leopards' leading scorer Jennifer Bayer had a game-high 11 boards but was held to only seven points.
Three other Bison scored in double-digits besides Almind as league-leading rebounder Quimby and league-leading scorer Creamer each added 11. Backup center Kate Rounsley, who also picked up some of the scoring slack left by Bucknell's foul trouble, recorded 14 points in the contest.
The Leopards head to Annapolis, Md., on Wednesday for a Patriot League matchup with Navy. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. and will be followed by the men's contest.
