EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette took Bucknell down to the wire before eventually losing a 17-16 decision in the final minutes in Patriot League football action on Saturday at Fisher Field.
Bucknell quarterback Todd Wenrich hit Jim Horan for an acrobatic 33-yard touchdown pass with 11:08 remaining in the game that gave the Bison the lead for good at 17-13.
Lafayette (1-4, 0-2) got on the scoreboard first when Martin Brecht nailed a 20-yard field goal, capping a 12-play, 72-yard drive on the first possession of the game.
Bucknell (4-1, 2-0) turned a Lafayette interception late in the first quarter into seven points when Jabu Powell capped a six-play, 41-yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown run to give Bucknell a 7-3 lead.
At the end of the second quarter, the Leopards put together a nine-play, 65-yard scoring drive. Quarterback Marko Glavic's 47-yard toss to Jeremy Burkes set up a second Brecht field goal that brought Lafayette within one, 7-6, at halftime. Glavic finished the day 21-of-35 for 268 yards passing, helping Lafayette outgain Bucknell 386-238 in total yards.
Bucknell extended its lead to 10-6 with 3:32 remaining in the third quarter on a 42-yard Chris Lundberg field goal. The lead did not hold up for long, however, as the Leopards put together and 89-yard scoring drive over the final minutes of the third quarter. Chad Ritchie, a back-up QB used in special situations inside the red zone, ran the ball in from one yard out to give Lafayette a 13-10 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, Lafayette and Bucknell fumbled the ball three times in the span of two minutes. The last fumble went Bucknell's way and the Bison capitalized with a two-play, 28-yard drive that ended with Horan's TD. Wenrich ended the game 16-of-26 for 152 yards passing.
The Leopards responded with a third Martin Brecht field goal following a 10-play, 55-yard drive. The Lafayette defense then forced Bucknell to punt, leaving the Lafayette offense with 2:50 in the game.
The Leopards moved the ball 39 yards on nine plays, but the drive was stopped with 10 seconds remaining when a Glavic pass was tipped and intercepted.
Lafayette returns to action on Oct. 20 at Holy Cross, while Bucknell faces Georgetown.
