Women's Soccer Comes Up Short in OT

HAMILTON, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's soccer team couldn't hold off a late Colgate rally on the road on Wednesday, losing a 3-2 decision in overtime. Lafayette's record moves to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in Patriot League play.

Colgate came out firing, outshooting Lafayette 14-3 in the first half. Thirty-six minutes into the opening session, Colgate took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kate Barrett off an assist from Mandy Palladino.

In the second half, sophomore Kerrie Kiley (Greenlawn, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored the equalizer. Kiley headed the ball in off a direct kick from junior Katie Fina (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) at 47:46. It was Kiley's first goal of the season.

At the 75-minute mark, the Leopards took their first lead of the game on Kati Kochersperger 's (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) third goal of the season. Junior Emily Myers (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) drew out the Colgate keeper and played the ball wide to an awaiting Kochersperger who banged home the goal to give Lafayette a 2-1 advantage. Myers' assist was her third in the last three games and upped her league-leading scoring total to 27 points (11 G, 5A).

Nine minutes later (84:35) Palladino tied the game, 2-2, to send it to overtime. Colgate's Meghan Merriman dealt the fatal blow with just eight seconds left (104:52) in the first sudden death overtime period. Palladino and Angela Puliafico were credited with assists.

Junior Ashley Wesmiller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) was in goal for the Leopards, stopping eight of the 37 shots fired off by Colgate. Kate Jassin made four saves in goal for Colgate (6-5-2, 2-3).

Lafayette returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Bucknell at 7 p.m.
