EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Colgate took advantage of three Lafayette turnovers to register its fifth straight win of the season, a 20-16 victory at Fisher Field.
On the opening drive of the game, Lafayette (1-6, 0-4) put together a 10-play, 55-yard drive. Martin Brecht finished off the possession with a 38-yard field goal. The Leopards held that 3-0 lead throughout the entire first quarter.
Colgate (5-2, 3-0) took its first lead of the game at 12:38 in the second quarter. Colgate QB Tom McCune hit Justin Polk for a 23-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-3. McCune finished the day 16-for-23 for 212 yards and one interception.
Under six minutes left in the opening half, Colgate was again threatening with the ball second and goal at the Lafayette five. McCune's pass was picked off by Jeff Werrell two yards deep in the end zone. Werrell ran it back to the Lafayette 44 before pitching it to teammate Adriel Linyear who took it to the endzone for the score. The interception return, the longest in school history, is officially recorded as 100 yards with Werrell receiving credit for the interception and Linyear for the touchdown.
Trailing 10-7, Colgate retook the lead on the last play of the first half. McCune's one-yard run around right end capped a 13-play, 66-yard drive and gave Colgate a 14-7 halftime lead.
At 2:47 in the third quarter, the Leopards, playing in front of a homecoming crowd, went up 16-14 on a 48-yard touchdown romp by Joe McCourt. McCourt finished the day with 160 yards on 17 carries, his first career 100-yard game. Brecht's PAT failed.
In the fourth quarter, Colgate's Matt Kobelski contributed a 15-yard scoring run on a six-play, 69-yard drive. After a failed two-point conversion, Colgate led 20-16.
Lafayette's next possession was a crucial one as it proved to be the Leopards' last. QB Marko Glavic, who finished the day 17-for-30 with 219 yards, started the drive out with a 25-yard pass to John Weyrauch and a nine-yard toss to Stewart Kupfer. The Leopards picked up four first downs, but the drive stalled at the Raider 13. With a fourth-and-eight situation, Lafayette elected to go for a 31-yard field goal that Brecht missed wide right.
Colgate recorded six first downs on the ensuing possession and ran out the clock.
Lafayette hosts Fordham next Saturday at 12:30 p.m., while Colgate hosts Lehigh.
