EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette men's soccer team came out on the short end of a 1-0 double-overtime decision to Navy on Saturday at Metzgar Fields.
Navy's Matt Sanchez scored the game-winning goal, his first goal of the season, at the 119-minute mark. Sanchez took a flick pass at the top of the box from Dan Montgomery, took a quick dribble and fired a shot that stayed just inside of the far post.
Lafayette (5-3-1, 0-2) was not without its scoring opportunities throughout the entire game, as the Leopards outshot Navy 15-4, including 6-1 in the first half andf 4-1 in the second half. With 10 minutes left in the first half, Lafayette had a flurry of four shots on goal off a lone cornerkick. The final shot came from sophomore Marko Lukin (Boonton, N.J./Morris Catholic), whose attempt ricocheted off the post, allowing a Navy defender to clear the ball.
Lukin and junior defender Paulo Coelho (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) led the Leopards with three shots apiece.
Sophomore Jay Freedman (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow East) allowed one goal in 119 minutes, but did not make any saves. Navy's Brian Steckroth stopped eight shots on goal in the win.
Lafayette returns to action on Tuesday when the Leopards travel to Oneonta for a 4 p.m. kick off.
