WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's soccer team improved to 2-0 in Patriot League play with a 3-2 victory over American 3-2 on Saturday in Washington, D.C.
Sophomore Meghan Ramsey (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) opened the scoring with her first tally of the season to put Lafayette ahead 1-0 just over three minutes into the game.
The Leopards jumped to a 2-0 lead when junior Katie Fina (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) assisted on sophomore Katie Morton's (Churchville, Pa./Penn Charter) goal late in the first half (43:59).
American fought back to even the game at 2-2 off goals from Katie Moore and Maha Elnabawi.
With less than 20 minutes to play in the game, the Leopards needed to spark some offensive rhythm. Sophomore Kerrie Kiley (Greenlawn, N.Y./St. Anthony's) rose to the occasion with tough play in the 18-yard box when she won a header that landed on the foot of Ramsey. Ramsey netted it for her second goal of the game.
The Eagles had an opportunity to tie the game when a shot deflected onto the hand of a Lafayette defender in the box. The resulting penalty kick went just wide right for American.
Leopard goaltender Marissa Mullins (Wall, N.J./Wall Township) made 10 saves in goal while American's Jen Liese recorded five saves for the game.
The Leopards were outshot 22-8 for the game, but improve to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League. American falls to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.
