ONEONTA, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Senior Keith Evans (La Plata, Md./La Plata) took a pass from sophomore Jamie Mullarkey (Cramlington, England/Cramlington), controlled it and put a shot just inside the right goal post in the 118th minute to lift Lafayette to a 2-1 victory over Oneonta State.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak and raised the Leopards' record to 6-3-1 while the loss for Oneonta (6-5) ended a three-game winning streak.
The game was played between the two penalty areas for most of the first half with neither team putting much pressure on the opposing keepers. Oneonta broke the scoreless tie in the 36th minute when James Crofts collected a rebound off the post and send it into the goal.
A tight second half saw Lafayette break through in the 81st minute on a corner kick. Evans sent in a ball that was headed by fellow co-captain Mike Saioni (Cold Spring, N.J./Wildwood Catholic). Saioni's shot deflected off a defender onto the foot of sophomore Matt Battiste (Niscayuna, N.Y./Niscayuna) who redirected it into the goal to tie the game at 1-1 and send the contest to overtime.
The first overtime period passed with few scoring opportunities for either team, the only good chance knocked away by a Leopard defender. Early in the second overtime, Lafayette turned up the offensive pressure. In one corner kick situation, the Leopards managed two point-blank shots that were knocked away by Oneonta defender Ben Swann. Lafayette kept on the attack and Evans ended the game with 1:43 remaining.
Sophomore goalie Joe Barham (Ocean Beach, N.J./Christian Brothers) saw his first action of the season, making three saves in the win.
Lafayette returns to action on Friday at 7 p.m. when the Leopards travel to face Army in Patriot League action.
