WORCESTER, Mass. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's soccer needed a win to qualify for the Patriot Legaue Tournament and that just what the Leopards' delivered with a 2-1 victory at Holy Cross on Saturday. Junior Emily Myers netted the game-winning goal at 71:12, propelling Lafayette to the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 1993.
The game opened with a scoreless first half and the shot total even at five apiece. In the second half, Holy Cross took the lead at 53:29 when Brandy Ault punched in a rebound off of a Sarah Comeaux shot.
Lafayette freshman Emily Kellner (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) scored the biggest goal of her collegiate career at 61:47. Kellner's second goal of the season came on assists by sophomore Kati Kochersperger (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and Myers and tied the game at 1-1.
Just over 10 minutes later (71:12), Myers came up with her third game-winning goal of the season, taking an assist from junior Katie Schrack (Mill Hall, Pa./Lock Haven). It was Myers' team-leading 12th goal of the 2001 campaign.
Lafayette junior goalkeeper Ashley Wesmiller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) stopped three shots to pick up the victory, while Christine Arsenault made two saves in goal for Holy Cross (6-9-2, 2-5-0).
With the win, Lafayette (11-7, 4-3) tied a program record for most wins in a season with, a mark equalling Lafayette's win total from 2000.
Lafayette will open Patriot League Tournament play on Nov. 9. The tournament site has yet to be determined. Lafayette will be either a No. 3 or No. 4 seed, pending the outcome of the Lehigh at American game on Sunday at 1 p.m. An American loss would give Lafayette the No. 3 seed and the Leopards would face No. 2 seed Bucknell. An American win would award Lafayette the No. 4 seed and the Leopards would face No. 1 seed Navy.
