CHARLESTON, S.C. - Youngstown State used a six-run eighth inning to notch a 7-3 come-from-behind win over Lafayette on Monday afternoon in Charleston, S.C.
Senior ace Kevin Swords threw seven innings of one-run baseball before YSU got to him in the eighth. Swords was credited with the loss, as four of YSU's six runs in the eighth were charged to him. Sophomore Jeff Zambrano came on in relief for Swords.
Lafayette got on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the fifth. With two outs, senior Ian Burley singled home freshman Jason Boyd. Sophomore Matt Tambellini tripled home Burley to give Lafayette a 2-0 lead after four and a half innings.
Youngstown State answered with one run in the bottom of the sixth, when Kellen Dixon doubled home the lead off hitter. Swords closed the door, however, getting the next batter to pop up to the catcher and striking out the final hitter of the inning.
In the seventh, Lafayette freshman Craig Alexander led off the inning with a double deep to left center. After Jason Moll drew a walk, Patriot League Player of the Week Adam Rosenberg loaded the bases with an infield single. Junior Tye Gonser drove home Alexander with a sac fly and Lafayette took a 3-1 lead. Rosenberg finished 3-for-4 on the day.
In the eighth, YSU cranked out six runs one four hits and an error to hold on for the 7-3 decision.
Lafayette (2-3) returns to action on Tuesday with a 2:30 p.m. start at Charleston Southern.
