Box Score

Philadelphia, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - A hot-hitting Penn squad used a late inning offensive rally to deal Lafayette a 17-8 loss in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday.

The Quakers scored 13 of their 17 runs in the game over the final four innings and cranked out 19 hits.

Lafayette took the early lead in the first. Following one-out singles from freshman Jason Boyd (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) and junior Vince D'Angelis (Montvale, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional), designated hitter Ian Burley (Nazareth, Pa./Notre Dame) drove home the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to to right.

The Leopards led 2-0 after the top of the third. Lead off man Tye Gonser (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles) doubled to right center and later stole third. Burley collected his second RBI of the game with another sacrifice fly to right.

Penn took the lead with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. RBI-singles from Steve Glass and Andrew McCreery and a two-run triple off the bat of Chris May gave Penn a 4-2 lead.

The Quaker lead lasted only until the top of the next inning when Lafyette answered back with four runs of its own. Gonser drove in Lafayette's first run with a single with runners on first and third. Boyd followed that up with a RBI-single to left for the Leopards. Lafayette's final two runs came on a bases-loaded walk and a bases-loaded wild pitch to give Lafayette a 6-4 lead.

Lafayette starter James Duer (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) left the game after three innings. Duer, who got a no decision, threw three innings while giving up seven hits and four runs.

Penn (11-3) scored seven runs off of Lafayette freshman reliever Paul Fischetti (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) in the fifth and sixth innings combined to take control of the game. The Quakers posted three runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to RBI-doubles from Jeff Gregorio and May and a one-out fielder's choice from Randy Ferrell. Penn tacked on four more in the sixth. May, who finished the day 4-for-5 with nine RBI, connected for the biggest hit of the inning, a two-run double that helped give Penn the 11-6 lead.

Lafayette scored its final two runs in the top of the seventh. Burley drove home D'Angelis with a double to right center and sophomore Matt Tambellini singled him home to make it 11-8.

Penn tacked on six runs over the seventh and eighth innings to put the final at 17-8.

Fischetti (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven runs (6 earned) over two and a third innings of relief. Matt Winn (1-0) earned the victory, throwing three innings while allowing five hits and four runs.

Lafayette (4-11) returns to action on Saturday, when it opens Patriot League play with a doubleheader at Bucknell.
