Box Score
DOVER, Del. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette came back from a disappointing 2-1 loss to Delaware State in game one to score all five of its runs in the fifth inning of the second game for a 5-3 victory on Wednesday.
In the first game, Lafayette jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning started by sophomore Mara Shainheit (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) who was walked by pitcher Christine Cariello. Shainheit advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third base on a bunt by freshman Laura Schrager (Montclair, N.J./Montclair-Kimberly Acad.). Schrager was thrown out attempting to steal second but that gave Shainheit time to score the lone Lafayette run of the game.
Delaware State jumped onto the scoreboard in the third inning when a double by Crystal Alexander scored Nicki Johnson from second base. The Hornets got their game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh when Jen Atkins hit an infield single to score Patty Brown who had doubled to start the inning.
Amy Magos (0-4)(Califon, N.J./Voorhees) picked up the loss for the Leopards but managed to allow just eight hits and walk only four batters. Cariello (4-5) allowed just one run on three hits while striking out four for the Hornets.
In game two, Lafayette (3-13) fell behind 2-0 before coming alive in the fifth inning. Junior Elizabeth Siliato (San Francisco, Calif./Andover Academy) singled to right to start the surge and advanced to second on a single by freshman Danielle Fecso (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen). Sophomore Erin Allison (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) followed with a single of her own to load the bases for Shainheit. Shainhet singled to the pitcher, allowing Siliato to score.
Schrager took the plate and knocked in two runs with a single to right center and took second base on a wild throw. Senior Becky Chmielowski (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) continued the scoring spree by singling down the left field line to drive in Shainheit. Danchak came in to pinch run for Chmielowski and stole second base before advancing to third on a wild pitch, which also scored Schrager to give Lafayette the 5-2 lead.
Delaware State (6-12) came back in the sixth inning to score a run on a Kelly Sartin single to center field but could not muster enough for the comeback.
Freshman Molly Moschberger (3-3) (Fairhaven, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) picked up the win by allowing just three runs on seven hits while striking out two.
