Box Score

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette baseball team was unable to come back after being swept by Holy Cross in Friday's doubleheader as it dropped two more games to Crusaders, 3-1 and 16-7, on Saturday at Metzgar Fields.

Holy Cross (14-14, 6-6) got out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the first game, sparked by a two-out single by shortstop Ed Turner. Cory Czajka drew a walk in the next at bat and a single by Peter Summa gave the Crusaders the lead.

The Leopards (7-23, 2-10) were able to knot up the contest in the bottom of the fifth when rookie sensation Adam Rosenberg (Ocean Grove, N.J./Neptune) hit a two-out triple to set up shortstop Jason Moll (Montville, N.J./Newark Academy). Rosenberg was able to score as Moll reached on an error by Turner. Jason Boyd (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) singled with a bunt to advance Moll but Ian Burley (Nazareth, Pa./Notre Dame) flied out to end the inning.

The Crusaders got their last two runs in the top of the eighth on a two RBI single through the left side by Bill Andruskevich.

James Duer (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) (2-1) picked up his first loss of the season on the mound for Lafayette while Ryan Kenny earned the win and D.J. Lucey picked up the save.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first three innings of the nightcap, including four innings in both the first and third innings. A two-run homer by Dale Johnson capped the four-run first inning as Peter Summa picked up an RBI and scored on an error by freshman Eric Vacca (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy).

The second inning gave Summa a two RBI double, giving the visiting team a 6-0 lead heading into the third. Johnson scored on an error by Boyd in the third and Eric Tapper picked up an RBI triple to extend the lead. Turner sacrificed to right field, scoring Tapper and Cory Czajka homered for a 10-0 lead.

Lafayette began a comeback in the bottom of the third, started by a Nick Taro (Bernardsville, N.J./The Delbarton School) single through the ride side. Taro took second on a wild pitch and Vacca singled down the right side to put runners at the corners for Rosenberg. Rosenberg sacrificed to left field, scoring Taro for the Leopards' first run of the game. Matt Tambellini (Millville, N.J./Sacred Heart) and Matt Maiorino (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) each drew bases loaded walks to cut the Holy Cross advantage to 10-3.

But the Crusaders added six runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a grand slam by Summa with one out. Johnson tripled and Mike Macholz singled for the last two Holy Cross runs of the game.

The Leopards picked up two runs in the fifth inning, started by a solo shot over the center field fence by Boyd. Burley tripled to set up Tambellini who hit a sacrifice fly to left.

Lafayette added its last two scores of the game in the seventh, with Burley and Maiorino picking up the RBI.

The Leopards went through six pitchers in the contest with Marcus Ward (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) picking up the loss.
