NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette cranked out a season-high seven goals en route to a 7-0 win at Iona on Wednesday in women's soccer action.
Sophomore Miriam Habeeb (Westfield, N.J./Kent Place School) scored just 6:30 into the contest in what would be the eventual game-winner for Lafayette (5-1).
The Leopards added three more goals in the first half. Freshman Emily Kellner (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) took a Briana Rinchiuso (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) pass and scored her second goal of the season at 16:28.
Junior Emily Myers (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) made it 3-0 with an unassisted score at 32:23. The Leopards tacked on a goal with two seconds left in the first half. Sophomore Katie Morton (Churchville, Pa./Penn Charter) collected a pass from classmate Amy Fortunato (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) for her first goal of the season.
With a 4-0 lead to begin the second half, the Leopards' offense refused to relent. Myers scored two goals under seven minutes apart to finish off the hat trick. She connected for her seventh and eighth goals of the season on assists from Habeeb at 46:50 and freshman Patricia Austin (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) at 53:31.
Freshman Meghan Sweeney (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) added a goal with 12 minutes left in the game. Fortunato, who was playing in her hometown, assisted on the goal, her second assist of the day.
The Leopards outshot the Gaels 32-7 while holding a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior Ashley Wesmiller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) made two saves in goal while registering her first full shutout of the season.
Lafayette returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Army at 7 p.m. in the Leopards' Patriot League opener.
