STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Junior Emily Myers (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) netted the game-winning goal, as the Lafayette women's soccer team handed Wagner a 1-0 defeat on Wednesday afternoon.
Myers, who registered six shots on goal for the game, dribbled down the center of the field and fired off a shot to the lower right corner, beating Wagner keeper Dana Honcharuk. Myers' tally at 22:09 was the only goal of the game as Lafayette registered its first shutout of the season.
Myers is on a torrid scoring pace, netting four goals over the first three games after finishing 20th in the nation in goals per game in 2000. The Leopards are equally hot as a team, starting out 3-0 for the first time in the program's 12 seasons.
The shot total gave a true indication of the momentum of Wednesday's contest at Wagner, as the Leopards outshot the Seahawks, 30-4. For the Leopards, 16 shots came on goal to two shots for Wagner (0-2).
Sophomore Marissa Mullins (Wall, N.J./Wall Township) and junior Ashley Wesmiller (Pittsbugh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) combined for the shutout. Neither was tested too extensively in the contest, but Mullins managed to record two saves.
Lafayette returns to action on Saturday in its home opener versus Mount St. Mary's. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Metzgar Fields.
