EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's basketball team fought back from a 14-point halftime deficit to beat Colgate, 72-68, on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center.
The Leopards jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the first half off a Liz Rojahn fast-break layup at 14:59. Colgate fought back to go on a 21-3 run for a 29-19 lead at 5:37 left in the half. The Raiders' Sarah Parks hit 2-of-2 from the charity stripe to give her team a 45-31 lead going into the locker room.
Lafayette began chipping away at the deficit to open the second half and eventually tied the game on a five-point possession at 7:46. Kim Costello sank her only three-pointer of the day as teammate Colleen Fitzpatrick was fouled under the basket. Fitzpatrick converted on 2-of-2 from the line for the Leopards' first lead of the second half, 56-55.
Colgate's Milaina Lagzdins made her next shot to give the Raiders a 57-56 advantage before two Sarah Parks' free throws gave the Raiders a 59-56 lead.
Lafayette freshmen Ashley MacLelland and Lindsay Myers made a layup and a jump shot in the next minute to tie the game 62-62 after Colgate's Victoria Briscoe hit a three-pointer at 5:57. MacLelland made another layup while Myers collected her own missed shot for a layup for a 70-66 Leopard lead at 1:28 left in the game.
The Leopards held on for a 72-68 win. Lafayette shot 46 percent in the second half compared to the Raiders' 32 percent.
Fitzpatrick led the Leopards with 18 points followed by Costello's 14 points. Myers added 11 points while Rojahn chipped in 10 points for Lafayette. Colgate was led by Allison Lipinski and Sarah Parks who each scored 18 points.
Lafayette returns to action on Wedenesday when it travels to archrival Lehigh for a 5:30 p.m. game in Bethlehem, Pa.
