Burke Tabbed As Patriot League Player of the Week

Jan. 28, 2002

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) -- - Fresh off a career-high 28-point performance versus Colgate, Lafayette senior Brian Burke (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Academy) has been selected as the Patriot League Men's Basketball Player of the Week, his first such award of the season and second of his career.

Burke averaged 19.7 points and 6.0 assists while going a perfect 19-for-19 from the line during the reporting week. He began the week with a 13-point, four-assist effort against Big Five champion Pennsylvania on Jan. 21.

The co-captain's performance at Navy was perhaps his best all-around effort of the season. Burke scored 18 points and dished off a career-high 11 assists to lead Lafayette to a 92-79. The Philadelphia native was wholly or partially responsible for 43 of Lafayette's 92 points in the game.

Against Colgate on Jan. 26, Burke scored a career-high 28 points and passed off for three assists. He went a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe to extend his consecutive free throw streak to 27 for the season and 19 for the week. Burke is already the Lafayette and Patriot League recordholder for consecutive free throws with 49 and is Lafayette's career free throw percentage leader at 88.5 percent (246-278). He is currently second in the conference at 89.5 percent (85-95) from the line.

Burke, who is averaging 14.3 points and 4.6 assists per game this season, is leaving an indelible impression elsewhere in the Lafayette recordbooks. He currently has 268 career assists and needs 19 to move into the top 10. His 108 career three-pointers have him tied for seventh place all-time, needing just 10 to move into the top five all-time.

Lafayette (9-10, 3-3) is currently tied for fourth place in the Patriot League, having beaten two of the three teams tied for first place. The Leopards return to action at Lehigh on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
