Women's Basketball Drops League Game to Army

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's basketball team dropped a Patriot League matchup to Army, 56-52, on Wednesday at Kirby Sports Center. The Black Knights broke a five-game skid to improve to 4-7 in league play while the Leopards fell to 1-10 in league action.

Lafayette co-captain Samaiyah Council converted a Leopard steal into a fast-break layup for a 14-point lead (29-15) with 4:18 left in the first half. Army scored 10 straight points before Lafayette's Kim Costello made 1-of-2 from the line to send the Leopards into halftime leading 30-25.

Army began chipping away at the deficit and took its first lead of the game on a Halaevalu Helu layup at 14:32. Lafayette's Jennifer Bayer gave the Leopards the lead (44-43) on a layup at 10:20 and extended the edge to a 46-43 advantage on a pair of free throws.

The Black Knights took a 53-49 lead on a Helu layup with 2:04 left to play before Lafayette's Costello hit her lone three-pointer of the day to bring her team within one, 53-52. The Leopards final shot attempt went wide, and Army made three foul shots to seal the 56-52 win.

Costello tied a career-high 14 points to lead the Leopards while Liz Rojahn added 10 points. Myers led the team in rebounds with nine.

Macfarlane led three Army players in double-figures with 17 points. Helo recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards as did teammate Amy Saal who notched 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Black Knights shot 40 percent from the floor in the second half compared to the Leopards' 18 percent. Lafayette forced 28 Army turnovers while committing 25.

Lafayette returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Navy. The Leopards look to avenge a one-point loss to the Midshipmen dating back to a 56-55 loss on Jan. 23.
