Lafayette Comes Up Short Versus Eagles

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's basketball team dropped a Patriot League matchup to American, 63-61, on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center. The Leopards were looking to avenge a 92-56 loss to the Eagles on Jan. 16, but came up short in the final moments.

The first half saw neither team take more than a three-point lead until the final minute of play when American's Kaitlin Schuyler converted 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to give the Eagles a 25-21 lead with 56 seconds left in the stanza. Lafayette's Elizabeth Rojahn made a layup to bring her team within two before Lindsay Myers converted two free throws to send the teams into the locker room tied, 25-25.

American jumped out to a seven-point lead in the second half when Hollie Steinman converted a steal into a 40-33 lead for the Eagles. The Leopards clawed their way back and took their first lead of the second half off Laurie Infantino's lone three-pointer of the day at 6:38. American responded with it's own three-pointer by Marie Werries to take a 56-52 lead at 4:40.

Lafayette's Kim Costello made 1-of-2 from the line to put the Leopards within two, 63-61, with nine seconds left to play. The Leopards forced an American turnover in the final seconds of play but were unable to get a shot off before running out of time.

The Leopards shot 48 percent from the floor compared to the Eagles' 44 percent and beat American on the boards, 37-34. American committed 19 turnovers while forcing 28 Lafayette turnovers for the game.

Lafayette's Myers led four players in double figures with 17 points. Costello added 14 while Colleen Fitzpatrick added 10 points. Rojahn notched her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

American was led by Chanel Hunt with 26 points and 10 boards. Steinman scored 12 points while Katryn Costenbader added 11.

Lafayette returns to action on Wednesday when it takes on Army in game one of a double header at Kirby Sports Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
