EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team overpowered Monmouth for a 14-7 win on Monday night at Rappolt Field. The Leopards (2-3) dominated offensively with seven different players contributing to the scoring led by senior Stephanie Tinney with three goals and two assists, and sophomore Jennifer Stone with four goals.
Lafayette's Tinney opened the scoring for Lafayette on an assist from Heather McClelland at 27:30, but the lead lasted for less than a minute as the Hawks' Beka Murphy tied the game with a tally at 26:32. Stone put the 'Pards up 2-1 off a pass from Kim Maron, but Monmouth rallied thirteen seconds later as Murphy dished off to teammate Stacy Sydlo for a 2-2 tied game.
The Lafayette offense picked up the pace as Tinney assisted on goals by Jill Marvin at 15:11 and McClelland at 14:50 for a 5-3 lead, but it didn't hold long as Monmouth fought to within a one-goal deficit off two tallies from Meg Brown. The Leopards' Erin Gallagher put the home team ahead 6-4 on an unassisted effort at 7:27 and McClelland notched her second goal of the game with a backhanded shot with 19 seconds remaining in the first half. Stone added the final goal of the half by converting on a free position shot with one second remaining as Lafayette took an 8-4 lead going into halftime.
Monmouth's Steph LaGrossa got the Hawk's on the board first in the second half with a goal at 20:37, but Lafayette quickly responded to score three goals in the next six minutes for an 11-5 lead. Lafayette's Maron notched her third goal of the year at 17:04 followed by Tinney's second of the game at 16:40. Fallon Cunningham scored off a feed from Marvin at 14:00 to give the Leopards a comfortable 11-5 lead. The Hawks added two more goals from LaGrossa and Kerry Pohmer, but it wasn't enough as Lafayette finished out the game with three more tallies including one from Tinney and two from Stone.
Senior goalie Leela Strong recorded 11 saves between the pipes while the Hawks' Stacy Makris notched 15 saves on the night. Lafayette out shot Monmouth 42-17 and picked up 42 ground balls to the Hawks' 22.
Lafayette (2-3) returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Rutgers at Rappolt Field at 4 p.m.
