Final Stats
BETHESDA, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - Day two of the Lafayette at Georgetown series produced similar results to the first day of play, a loss in the opener and a win in the nightcap.
In the opener, Georgetown did the majority of its run scoring in the first three innings. The Hoyas cranked out five runs over the first three frames with one in the first and second innings and three in the third.
In the first inning, Georgetown drove home its first run on an RBI single from Mike Lombardi. The Hoyas went up 2-0 in the second on Mike Green's RBI single.
Lafayette tied the game 2-2 in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Adam Rosenberg reached base with a lead-off double. Two batters later, Rosenberg jogged home thanks to a two-run home run to left field from Vince D'Angelis, his first round-tripper of the season.
The home half of the fourth was the key inning. Georgetown's Brett McLeod blasted a bases-clearing triple to give Georgetown a 5-2 lead. Georgetown tacked on two more runs in the fourth on an RBI triple and a sac fly.
Lafayette plated its final run in the top of the sixth when Rosenberg drove a single through the left side to bring in Jason Moll.
Lafayette starter Matt Tambellini threw three innings in the loss, striking out three while giving up 10 hits. Eric Sutton pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits.
In game two, Lafayette starter Joe Saporetti threw a complete game, allowing just two runs in an 8-2 victory for the Leopards.
Lafayette didn't waste much time getting its offense moving in the second game. In the top of the first, D'Angelis drove home Tye Gonser and Rosenberg who had reached on back-to-back singles to give Lafayette a 2-0 lead.
Lafayette led 4-0 after the third inning after Tambellini knocked in a run with a single and D'Angelis came plateward following an error by the catcher.
Meanwhile, Saporetti cruised through the first two innings, facing the minimum each time out. The home half of the third inning was the lone blemish on Saporetti's day, as Georgetown scored its only runs of the game. Georgetown led off with two base hits, leaving runners at the corners with no outs. Tony Lee grounded out to Saporetti to drive in the first run. The next batter, Green, singled to center to score the second run, but was cut down while trying to stretch the hit into a double. Saporetti struck out Ron Cano, but he reached on a passed ball. Saporetti finally ended the inning with a second strikeout.
Leading 4-2, Lafayette added three insurance runs in the fifth. With one out and runners on first and third, Jeff Rodgers drove in Tambellini from third with an RBI single. Lafayette struck for two more runs on a Gonser double to give Lafayette a 7-2 lead.
The Leopards added one more run in the sixth on an RBI single by Tambellini who finished the game with two hits and two RBI. Rosenberg and D'Angelis each went 3-for-4 in the game.
Saporetti got the complete game win. He struck out four and walked one while allowing eight hits in seven innings of work. Thomas Braun took the loss for Georgetown (4-9), throwing 2.1 innings with two walks, a strikeout and six hits.
The Leopards (2-2) return to action on Wednesday at 3 p.m. when they host East Stroudsburg at Metzgar Field.
